The Home Visit

Note: Due to COVID-19, home visits have been conducted virtually. Please check your class information for the latest updates.
At Operation House Call, we deeply appreciate the invaluable insights that families bring to the table in caring for children with developmental differences and their interactions with healthcare professionals.
During your class, you and your partner will be introduced to a family host. We encourage you to reach out to your host family within a day or two of your class and schedule a home visit, either in person or via Zoom. Please refer to your school’s OHC class guidelines for specific details.
The home visit is a remarkable opportunity to connect with individuals with disabilities and their families outside of crisis situations. It is a chance to engage with all family members, ask questions, and listen with empathy. Families genuinely value your interest in their child or adult family member with an intellectual or developmental disability.
You are expected to guide your learning through thoughtful questions, steering clear of personal care or medical advice. While sample questions are available, feel free to ask your own, demonstrating sensitivity to the family’s needs. Families are eager to support your learning journey in any way they can.
Promptly reaching out to your host family, following your OHC class directions, is essential. In case you encounter challenges, do not hesitate to contact your OHC Parent Instructor or OHC Family Coordinator. Meeting these expectations is not only a professional requirement but also a reflection of the care and respect we hold for the families we serve.
